Cosmetic treatments for vitiligo that can show good results

Vitiligo is a genetic disorder that cause lightening or loss of pigmentation from skin or hair color in form of patches on face or any part of the body.Symptoms are usually described as Loss of skin color for any part of the body in form of patches or change in the color of retina in the eyeball. Furthermore, it can cause premature lightening of hair on your body, eyelashes and eyebrows.Also, in some cases you can observe the loss of pigment from inner lining of the tissue in mouth and nose.

It is usually caused by autoimmune disorder which cause destruction of melanin(pigment) producing cells in the skin.Vitiligo doesn’t cause any pain or change in body function but it can put you under a social pressure. A person can get disturbed or anxious about his or hers looks because of this. There are many therapies which help to induce more self-confidence and being comfortable in your own skin.

 

There are many medication and cosmetic procedure that are available that can help to make the even skin color. But different people show a different response to the treatments and there results may vary. Also, it requires quite long time to start showing work.

Treatments:

 

Corticosteroids:

Usually they may apply corticosteroids ointment on the skin to reduce inflammation and can return the pigment of the skin to some extent. Some corticosteroids show a good response to stop the vitiligo from spreading and some have shown good results in returning the skin pigment.

They are also given as oral medication but it can increase the risk of skin thinning or dry skin. This is often combine with other treatments like calcipotriene which is a form of vitamin D. it is combined with corticosteroids and applied as an ointment on affected area.

These topical treatments have certain side effects in the skin and it should not be given more than a month if there are no results. Also there is cream that are used for tanning the skin which can be temporary and also some makeup products can be used to hide it .

 

Immunosuppressants:

Your doctor might also prescribes you with some immunosuppressant (oral medication and ointment) that can calm down the immune system from destroying normal cells. But with this body can also get vulnerable to get other infections. Your doctor will definitely prescribe you if he thinks there are more benefits than possible harms. But there are quite strict warning regarding this as it is related to skin cancer.

 

Sunscreen:

People with vitiligo must not forget to apply sunscreen on face or any are which is more often exposed to sun. As lighter areas are susceptible to permanent skin damage as it is more sensitive to the sunlight. Also, these lighter are can develop cancer in severe cases.

De-pigmentation:

This procedure involves bleaching of the other remaining unaffected part of the skin to even out the whole skin. This is the option when most of the skin area is affected with vitiligo. Usually bleaching agents are used like hydroquinone or monobenzone etc.

This is permanent treatment but it has an effect on skin which can make it more sensitive to sunlight. So extra care from sun is needed and sunscreen is must in this case.

 

Skin grafting:

This is the surgical procedure which involve removal of healthy and pigmented skin from any area of the body and graft it in affected area. Positive results can start the pigmentation formation again but it is unpredictable. As sometime color doesn’t return and it further has side effects on skin like spotty skin or infection. In worse cases, it can even give rise to more vitiligo patches on affected area.

 

Blister grafting:

It is also a surgical procedure which involves induction of blisters on normal pigmented skin through suction method. This blister is then implanted on affected area and this can cause return of pigmentation. But again, this one can also has side effects like scarring, spotty skin, infection and more discoloring of the skin.

 

Phototherapy with UVA and UVB light:

These professional procedure usually involves first taking of oral medication which increase the skin sensitivity. Then it is exposed to a bit high intensity UVA or UVB light. This might take several sessions per week and it has shown some good results in its effectiveness. Because of unpredictability of vitiligo there is not guarantee that this treatment will work or not.

 

Micro-pigmentation (tattooing)

This is the micro filling of skin with pigment which is synthetic and it might get hard to match the exact color of skin. This is good for darker skin color people and it can show side effects as well. Like skin injury can trigger more vitiligo patch. Tattooing usually fades with time and it doesn’t show response to darkening procedures as well.
